Skinterface: Makes Possible to Feel Virtual Reality

The onset of amazing technological advancements and Artificial Intelligence (AI) thereon have made confined humans to digital spaces over physical reality. The recent game that made almost everyone on streets, Pokemon GO stands evidential to prove that humans these days are more likely to spend their time digitally. The scientists have come up with “Skinterface.”

Until today augmented reality is confined to vision. Nevertheless, with the invention of Skinterface, the whole body can become a part of virtual experiences.

Skinterface is a tactile suit. The Skinterface was created by a group of designers at London’s Royal College of Art. According to the website they have launched for the innovative suit, the Skinterface works as both an input and output device for physical interaction with the digital world. “Skinterface enables two-way physical interactions with computer simulated objects and environments, creating a fully immersive experience. Located and tracked through 3D space, Skinterface is equipped with sophisticated actuators which convey subtle sensations, effectively converting virtual interaction into physical feeling.”

The suit’s designers claim that the suit is the first technology capable of allowing users to effectively cross the threshold from the physical world to the digital one. Once that threshold is crossed, the designers claim new possibilities of VR experiences are possible. “Beyond this transition, the suit would also be capable of facilitating two-way interactions with virtual objects or people—be that for entertainment, communication, virtual prototyping or one of the many other potential applications.”

According to Digital Trends, the suit was displayed at the 2016 Milan Design showcase and is sensitive enough to give users the sensation of a ceiling fan’s breeze or a soft couch cushion conforming to your weight. Skinterface is a unique innovation and is groundbreaking in the study of digital space. This has clearly transcended the digital space into that of reality.
