Mutations hinder stem cell therapies

Mutations hinder stem cell therapies

The mutations in the mitochondrial DNA inhibit the growth of stem cells. The stem cells therapies hence can be unsuccessful to reduce the ageing effect in the human beings. There are ways we can ignore the mutated DNA and apply the therapies on the non-mutated ones. But these methods are not easy.

Mutations increase as you age

The mitochondrial DNA mutations increase as you age .The function of the cells decreases as the mutations grow large. The percentage of the mutations can be different for different cells. So these can hinder the stem cells therapies.

IPSC lines play a major role

Scientists made different experiments on the mitochondrial DNA. Major results came out when they sequenced the stem cell lines (IPSC lines). The patients over 60 years were found of to have the larger number mutated DNA.

Choosing the least damaged line

It is extremely difficult to choose a least damaged line. Each line of a different cells has different amount of mutation. So reading the IPSC lines becomes a really important challenge before performing the stem cell therapies.

How to understand these mutation?

The technology is still old to understand these mutations .The Sanger sequencing, a particularly older technology still in use is unable to detect mutations that undergo in less than 20% of the sample provided.

Recent Observations

The recent experiments done by scientist had following observations:

Next generation sequencing is the solution

The next generation technology should be used to identify mitochondrial gnome in a cell, but such a technology is in developing stage and is not cheap and feasible, so to do such tests will take time and we can expect them in a near future.

So if you really want to look younger than you have to wait for technology to become more advance as well as feasible to counter these mitochondrial DNA.
